Getting Around

Japan has one of the world's best public transportation systems. Trains are punctual to the second, clean, and reach virtually everywhere.

Shinkansen (Bullet Train)

Connects major cities at speeds up to 320 km/h. Reserve seats during peak times. Green cars are first class.

Tokyo Metro

13 lines covering central Tokyo. Runs 5am-midnight. Can get extremely crowded during rush hour (7-9am, 5-8pm).

Last Train Warning

Trains stop around midnight. Missing the last train means expensive taxis or waiting until 5am.

Priority Seating

Colored seats near doors are for elderly, pregnant, or disabled passengers. Give them up when needed.

Money & Currency

Japanese Yen(JPY)
  • •Carry at least ¥10,000-20,000 in cash at all times
  • •Coins go up to ¥500 - don't ignore them, they add up
  • •Currency exchange at airports has decent rates

Common Scams to Avoid

Fake Monks

People dressed as monks asking for donations in exchange for beads or blessings.

✓ Real monks don't solicit donations on streets. Politely decline and walk away.

Bar Overcharging

Being led to a bar in entertainment districts and receiving a massive bill.

✓ Avoid touts in Kabukicho, Roppongi. Check prices before ordering. Stick to established venues.

Taxi Long Routes

Some taxi drivers take longer routes for tourists, especially from airports.

✓ Use Google Maps to follow the route. Better yet, use trains from airports.

Cultural Etiquette
