Money Matters

  • ATMs (distributeurs) are everywhere and usually have good rates
  • Small purchases under €5 may require cash at some shops
  • Keep some coins for public toilets and smaller purchases
  • Currency exchange at airports has poor rates - use ATMs instead

Getting Around

France has an excellent transportation network. The Paris Metro and nationwide TGV high speed trains make travel efficient and comfortable.

Paris Metro Tips

Runs 5:30am-1:15am (2:15am Fri-Sat). Keep tickets until you exit - inspectors check regularly.

RER to Airports

RER B connects central Paris to CDG airport (35 min) and Orly (via Orlyval). Much cheaper than taxis.

Validate Train Tickets

You must validate (composter) tickets at yellow machines before boarding regional trains or face fines.

BlaBlaCar for Savings

Popular rideshare app for intercity travel. Can be 50% cheaper than trains.

Stay Alert

Petition Scam

Someone asks you to sign a petition (often for deaf/mute charity), then demands money or picks your pocket.

→ Firmly say 'Non' and keep walking. Don't engage or stop.

Gold Ring Trick

Someone 'finds' a gold ring, offers it to you, then asks for money as a reward.

→ Decline firmly. The ring is worthless brass.

Friendship Bracelet

Near Sacré-Cœur, men tie bracelets on your wrist then demand payment.

→ Keep hands in pockets near Montmartre. Say 'Non merci' and walk away quickly.

Fake Police

People claiming to be police ask to check your wallet for 'counterfeit bills'.

→ Real police won't ask to see your money. Ask for badge and offer to go to a station.

French Etiquette

Always Say Bonjour

Greet shopkeepers, waiters, and staff with 'Bonjour' before any interaction. It's considered rude not to.

Meal Times Are Sacred

Lunch is typically 12-2pm, dinner 7:30-10pm. Many restaurants close between meals.

Dress Well

French people tend to dress smartly. Avoid athletic wear and flip-flops for a better reception at restaurants.

Cheek Kisses (La Bise)

Friends and acquaintances greet with cheek kisses. Usually 2 kisses, but varies by region (up to 4!).

Bread Etiquette

Place bread directly on the table, not on your plate. It's provided free with meals.

À Voir

Paris

Eiffel Tower

Paris's iconic iron lady. Book tickets online to skip long queues. Sunset visits are magical.

Paris

Louvre Museum

World's largest art museum. Book timed entry. Don't miss Mona Lisa, but explore beyond it.

Normandy

Mont Saint-Michel

Medieval abbey on a tidal island. Visit during low tide to walk on the sand.

Côte d'Azur

French Riviera

Glamorous coastline with Nice, Cannes, and Monaco. Best in summer for beaches.

Versailles

Château de Versailles

Opulent palace of French kings. Gardens are free on some days. Arrive early.
